Seaton – a World Famous Centre for Multi-terrain Running
Due to the exploits and events of the local Axe Valley Runners (AVR) Seaton is firmly “on the map” as far running is concerned. The town and the surrounding area is well-known at a national level for the infamous Grizzly multi-terrain running experience, a 20 mile cross-country event which is reputedly the toughest such race in the UK. This run attracts 2000 entrants and is full within two weeks of applications opening. Most of the course, which is changed slightly every year, lies on or adjacent to the coast. It was voted the third best race in the whole country (out of 2500) in 2005.
The Axe Valley Runners also organise the Seaton Half Marathon (which often incorporates the Devon Half Marathon championship) as well as the unique and very popular Midsummer Dream Footpath Challenge; a 20 mile, five pub event.
There is already an “Exe to Axe” World Heritage Coast running event (from Exmouth to Seaton) in April which is now organised by the Sidmouth Running Club.
These events attract not only the runners but also their families, in the case of the Grizzly often for the entire weekend, thus stimulating the economy of the Town. These occasions will offer opportunities for the Visitor Centre to lay on special activities.
