Our Visitor Centre
Why is Seaton an ideal place for a Visitor Centre for the Jurassic Coast?
Seaton is significant as the only Gateway Town to the Jurassic Coast where visitors can walk relatively quickly to parts of the site with rocks from all three eras - Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous - and allows access to the spectacular Undercliff National Nature Reserve. In addition the town offers the award winning local nature reserve, the wildlife of Seaton Marshes and the Seaton Tramway amongst other attractions.
Over the past few years, concentrated effort by the Seaton Visitor Centre Trust (previously the Seaton Gateway Town Group) with its funding partners - Devon County Council, East Devon District Council, South West of England Regional Development Agency and Seaton Town Council, has resulted in plans for an interpretation centre that will provide an excellent quality visitor experience.
The Seaton Visitor Centre will enable the connection and interpretation of the wide range of local natural environments on the coast and the surrounding Wetlands.
The Centre will provide insights in to the unique geology of the area, provide information and practical experience of the wonderful Wetlands, be a centre for learning about flora, fauna and marine life, act as a starting point for educational walks around the area and provide facilities for the projected ‘Stopline’ cycle route.
Two professional feasibility studies have proved that, not only is a high quality interpretation centre viable, but that once established it would be financially sustainable. The Centre will attract many thousands of new and repeat visitors to the area throughout the year, all of whom will contribute to the economy.
The newly formed Board of Trustees will ensure that the ongoing success of the Centre results in fulfilling the objectives set.
The Seaton Visitor Centre Trust will continue to raise awareness and funds to support the ongoing projects that will ultimately pivot from the Centre and we do hope you will support these events.
For this to be the heart of the community, it has to have the community at its heart.
Please help by attending fundraising events or getting involved. It is crucial that Seaton and the surrounding area are behind the Centre and one way this can be shown is by the fundraising efforts.
More details regarding the Centre will be
published as soon as they becomes available.
