Seaton BannersThe Seaton World Heritage Coast Centre will bring together all the community and visitors to experience and learn about our local Jurassic area and the environment we live in.

The building itself will be an aesthetic exemplar of artistic and sustainable design and be used to promote art of all types through workshops and exhibitions, particularly related to the story and wonder of the coast and adjacent landscape.

The Art Story will be brought together by local artists, schools and the community and incorporate a spectrum of Light, Sound, Texture, Beauty and Wonder. There will be ongoing exhibitions and hands-on experiences for all to Touch, Hear and See with projects featuring Wind, Sun, Water and Change.

Seaton has a quarter mile of sea wall which could be used as an exhibition space to show the history of the Jurassic coast, using a variety of materials such as mosaics, relief sculpture and painting. Seaton also has many community gardens and spaces where art and crafts could be shown. With the Visitor Centre in the heart of Seaton there would be exhibition spaces, both inside and out, with ongoing workshops and courses throughout the year.

There is support from schools including Seaton Primary School, Axe Valley Community College, Colyton Grammar School and St Clare’s Adult Education Centre. Other Arts & Crafts Societies and small businesses have expressed an interest in various community projects.

These could include:

  1. Printed banners along the sea front.

  2. Mosaics on the sea wall.

  3. Sculptures in the gardens and along the sea front.

  4. Summer workshops for both locals and visitors.

  5. Beach art, which could change with the tides.

  6. Painted pebbles.

  7. Exhibitions in coffee shops and galleries.

There are a number of talented, local artists who could offer a variety of workshops and exhibitions specifically designed around the theme of the Jurassic Coast.

These could include

  1. Stone carving.

  2. Glass.

  3. Graphics.

  4. Garden sculpture & landscape art.

  5. Fabric work.

  6. Mosaics.

  7. Movement.

  8. Painting.

  9. Photography.

  10. Pottery.

  11. Printing.

  12. Sculpture.

  13. Sound.

  14. Stained glass.

  15. Willow work.

  16. Wrought iron work.

Many of these will be using local materials.

We are blessed with a number of community artists who strive to enhance our local environment, with a selection of Light -Sound -Texture - Colour - Shape - Movement & Awareness.

The facilities we envisage are:

  1. Exhibition space in and outside.

  2. Workshop space for arts & crafts.

  3. Dance and music space.

The Visitor Centre will be created by a design team of architects including local Artists and Environmentalists in such a way as to bring sight, sound, texture using alternative sources of energy of light, wind and water into the fabric and interior of the building.

This will make the Seaton Visitor Centre an aesthetic and sustainable example of excellence.

The Centre will strive to use art and education to explore and create a stimulating experience for all visitors. It will bring together local artists and the community to produce an experience of wonder that we can all share.
